COAST...
Living on the Isle of Portland, I am immersed in the coast, skies and captivating light which is unique to the Island. The weather conditions in this micro-climate can differ hugely from the mainland, less than a few miles away. My recent practice explores the relationship of the transient skies and sometimes chaotic seas from various viewpoints on Portland. My paintings are an emotional reaction to the location and ever changing seasonal patterns. I work from drawings and photographs created on walks, in a physical manner full of movement, mark making and expression, building layer upon layer of oil, charcoal and acrylic. My paintings show a visual contradiction of realism and abstraction, smoothness and texture, light and shade turbulence and tranquillity.
